1. Bas-Saint-Laurent
After we drove through it many times on our way to Gaspésie, we finally explored Bas-Saint-Laurent last summer and it instantly became a new favorite. Between the St. Lawrence, the forest, and a series of truly unique experiences, this authentic region delivers unforgettable moments at every stop.
Head first to the Putep ‘t-awt Marine Mammal Observation Station in Cacouna for stunning views of the St. Lawrence and a rich immersion into Wolastoqey culture. Accessible on foot via a 2-kilometre trail or by shuttle, the site features beautiful observation decks and wildlife interpretation activities, including the Fenêtre sur les bélugas initiative. To maximize your chances of spotting them, plan your visit on a calm day, belugas and seals are far more visible when the river is still.

For a truly magical experience on the water, sail with Duvetnor from the Rivière-du-Loup marina. If you book between June and mid-July, hundreds of birds swimming and swooping around the boat and the surrounding islands will be your company along the way. It’s the ideal time to observe these seabirds in their natural environment on a guided tour through the archipelago.

For the ultimate way to cap off this experience, we highly recommend spending the night at the Phare du Pot-à-l’Eau-de-Vie (also accessible through Duvetnor), the kind of bucket list stay you’ll never forget. Welcomed by the lighthouse keeper and chef, you’ll enjoy a full gourmet dinner followed by a homemade brunch the next morning. During our visit, we had the lighthouse entirely to ourselves, taking in spectacular sunsets and a star-filled sky with zero light pollution.

For foodies, you can also start your day in Rivière-du-Loup on the Café Culturel de la Pointe’s Terrace for a waterfront breakfast. With its house-made pastries, perfectly executed coffee (the cortado and cappuccino are especially worth ordering), and a sweeping view of the St. Lawrence, it’s the kind of place where time slows down and you’ll want to linger just a little longer than planned.
We also recommend Maqahamok in Cacouna, a must-visit address in the region. This Wolastoqey pub, led by chef Maxime Lizotte from the Wahsipekuk community, offers Indigenous cuisine reimagined with a refreshing modern flair. Don’t miss the Sak, a lobster roll elevated with a herb yogurt aioli and corn vierge sauce and their signature fried dough dessert topped with caramelized apples and cheesecake chunks. Creative cocktails made with local spirits and artisanal syrups round out the experience beautifully.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Parc National du Bic, one of Quebec’s natural jewels, located about 20 minutes from Rimouski, is a must. Its jagged cliffs, hidden coves, dramatic landscapes, and coniferous forests deliver breathtaking panoramas at every turn. The Cap à l’Orignal trail is a park classic, offering one of the finest views of the St. Lawrence from its heights. The Murailles and Coulée trails (Cap Caribou sector) are equally beautiful, with great wildlife spotting opportunities, including grey seals, red foxes, and a variety of seabirds. For a more immersive experience, sea kayaking excursions through the park’s coves and islets are extremely popular in July and August and should be reserved well in advance.
2. Gaspésie
For more sea breezes and spectacular scenery, Gaspésie is another perfect destination for your next road trip. Considered the birthplace of western history in North America, where Jacques Cartier planted his cross in 1534, Gaspésie is equally celebrated for its lush national parks and dramatic coastline.
Begin your journey at the edge of the world: Forillon National Park, the easternmost tip of the Gulf. Fill your lungs with fresh sea air while exploring its impressive cliffs and lush forest trails. You might spot whales, seals, black bears, and moose along the way. Take a break on its pebble beach and admire the Cap-Gaspé lighthouse, perched dramatically on a 95-metre cliff.

If the history of the Second World War interests you, make sure to visit Fort-Péninsule, a coastal battery from that era. And if you’re drawn to natural history, the Miguasha Fossil Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an extraordinary stop. No Gaspésie escape is complete without a visit to the Parc national de l’Île-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé, where a colony of 116,000 northern gannets puts on an unforgettable show.

For accommodations, we recommend booking a stay at Panora Loges in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, their riverside mini-chalets, each with a private hot tub and panoramic views, are perfect for recharging after long days of exploration. If you’d prefer to stay closer to Percé, settle in at Le Nordet, a wonderfully cozy eco-friendly hotel that also offers access to Thuya Spa, the first Nordic spa on the Gaspesian peninsula. Nearby, you can explore the stunning Pointe Verte trail at Pointe-Saint-Pierre or book a sea kayaking excursion with Avolo Plein Air.

An idyllic region for food lovers, Charlevoix is renowned for its celebrated Route des Saveurs. From farm-to-table restaurants like Les Faux Bergers to artisan products, sparkling ciders, excellent craft beers (like Menaud), and an impressive range of fine cheeses, there’s no shortage of culinary discoveries from Baie-Saint-Paul to La Malbaie.

Baie-Saint-Paul deserves a long stop to explore its galleries, artisan shops, and lively restaurants. Continuing along Route 138, pull over at the Port-au-Persil wharf for a peaceful rest and a breathtaking view of the St. Lawrence. For an even more striking perspective on the river, a whale-watching cruise is an unforgettable experience to share with family or a loved one.
Parc national des Grands-Jardins and Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie are also essential stops for experiencing Charlevoix’s natural wonders. The hikes to l’Acropole des Draveurs and Mont-du-Lac-des-Cygnes offer truly majestic viewpoints and rank among the most sought-after trails in Quebec.

The Jean Larose waterfall in Côte-de-Beaupré is equally impressive, with its multiple cascading tiers that make you feel like you’ve been transported to another world. Easily accessible in summer via on-site stairs, you’ll need to be ready to tackle 350 steps to fully appreciate its beauty.

On the south side of the island, Saint-Jean is home to one of Quebec’s most beautiful villages and the Manoir Mauvide-Genest, a surviving piece of New France built in 1734. If genealogy captivates you, the Parc des Ancêtres and Maison de nos Aïeux in Sainte-Famille are wonderful spots to explore your ancestral roots. End your circuit in Saint-Pierre, stopping at Cassis Monna et Filles liqueur house, all while admiring the island’s oldest church, standing since 1717. For a bite to eat during your visit, we also recommend La Midinette, the bakery-buvette created by the Monna et Filles sisters, ideal for picking up freshly baked pastries or enjoying a few small plates on their patio.
